RENAISSANCE PAINTING

The term Renaissance, meaning “rebirth,” describes the cultural revolution of the 15th and 16th centuries; it originated in Italy with the revival of interest in classical culture and a strong belief in individualism
Early Renaissance Painting
Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian was painted by Italian artist Andrea Mantegna in about 1460. Although it is not as dramatic as some of the artist’s larger murals, it still shows his interest in illusionistic perspective (particularly in the foreground). The arch that the martyr leans against is based on that of Septimus Severus in Rome. The painting is 68 by 30 cm (27 by 12 in).
